Minnesota First Lady Gwen Walz has come under fire for a recent campaign speech in which she mocked former President Donald Trump with a “turn the page” metaphor, leading to a wave of criticism from both political opponents and social media users.
At a Wisconsin campaign stop for her husband, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Vice President Kamala Harris, Gwen Walz gave a speech meant to bolster Democratic ticket support. Nevertheless, her performance was soon made fun of.
During her remarks, Gwen Walz performed a page-turning gesture and invited the audience to follow suit, signifying her intention to move past Trump’s campaign. Referring to Harris’ most recent debate performance, Walz remarked, “You probably saw that debate the other night.” “We had to turn the page, Kamala Harris said. Yes, as we are in the midst of something incredibly wonderful.”
The first lady’s attempt to engage the audience with a physical pantomime of turning a page, followed by a declaration of “Bye, bye” to Trump, was met with swift criticism. Commentators on social media labeled the speech as “cringe” and accused Walz of embodying “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” One critic quipped, “I’m sorry you have to watch this,” in response to a viral clip of the speech.
Gwen Walz, who has been Minnesota’s first lady since 2019, previously stirred controversy with remarks about the 2020 Minnesota riots. Her comments at that time, describing how she kept her windows open to “feel” the impact of the riots, were widely criticized as “bizarre.”
The recent backlash reflects ongoing tensions and the high stakes of the 2024 election, with both major parties vigorously defending their positions and candidates. Despite the criticism, the Walz campaign continues to push forward with their message of change and opposition to Trump.
