Shonda Rhimes recently opened up about the infamous on-set feud between Grey’s Anatomy stars Patrick Dempsey and Isaiah Washington, admitting she was surprised by how much the incident still lingers in the minds of cast members.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rhimes revealed that nearly every conversation on set still includes some reference to the 2007 altercation. She recalled how the controversy created early turbulence for the medical drama, saying, “I think the thorn was having the bubble of joy burst so early on Grey’s [with the Washington incident].”

The incident, as reported by CBS News, involved Washington directing homophobic slurs at Dempsey, leading to public backlash. Though Washington later issued an apology, ABC ultimately chose not to renew his contract, and his character, Dr. Preston Burke, was written out of the show in 2008.

Rhimes also reflected on other behind-the-scenes challenges, including Katherine Heigl’s abrupt departure in 2010. Heigl famously criticized the show’s writing, stating that the material did not warrant her Emmy consideration. The tension forced Rhimes to rethink her approach to storytelling and leadership on the long-running series.

Despite the early controversies, Grey’s Anatomy has endured, currently airing its 21st season on ABC.
