Graham Greene, the acclaimed Canadian First Nations actor, passed away at the age of 73 on September 1, 2025. He died in a Toronto hospital after a long illness. His sudden passing has left a huge void in the entertainment world, as he was loved for his talent, dedication, and the trail he blazed for Indigenous actors in Hollywood.
His agent, Michael Greene, shared the news with Deadline, remembering Graham as a man of morals and character. He added that Graham was finally free and reunited in heaven with Susan Smith, his longtime former agent who passed away in 2013. “He was a great man of morals, ethics and character and will be eternally missed. You are finally free. Susan Smith is meeting you at the gates of heaven,” Michael said.
Graham Greene was born on June 22, 1952, in Ohsweken on the Six Nations Reserve. Before acting, he worked a variety of jobs but eventually found his passion on stage. By the 1970s, he was performing in Canadian and English professional theatre. His on-screen debut came in 1979 with an episode of the Canadian drama The Great Detective, followed by his first film, the 1983 drama Running Brave.
He gained widespread recognition with his role in Kevin Costner’s Dances with Wolves in 1990. The film earned 12 Academy Award nominations, including one for Graham as Best Supporting Actor, and won seven Oscars, including Best Picture. This project firmly launched his Hollywood career. He also had TV credits on series like Wolf Lake, Defiance, Marvel’s Echo, Northern Exposure, Longmire, Being Erica, Goliath, and American Gods.
Throughout his career, Graham Greene earned an Oscar nomination, won a Grammy, a Gemini, and a Canadian Screen Award, and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. He had a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame and received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award earlier this year. He is survived by his wife of over 30 years, Hilary Blackmore, their daughter Lilly Lazare-Greene, and grandson Tarlo.
Graham Greene’s talent, legacy, and pioneering presence in film and television will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.
