Google has officially launched contextual smart replies powered by its Gemini generative AI within Gmail, enhancing the way users can respond to emails. This feature builds upon the existing smart replies, which have been a staple in Gmail since 2017. Previously, these machine-generated responses provided quick, albeit generic, ways to acknowledge messages or show agreement without much personal touch.
With the introduction of Gemini-generated smart replies, Google aims to make email communication more efficient and personalized. The new feature examines the entire email thread, enabling it to produce responses that are more comprehensive and contextually appropriate. Users will see multiple response options at the bottom of the screen when replying through the Gmail app. By hovering over these options, users can preview the suggested replies in detail, enabling them to select the most appropriate response quickly.
Access to Gemini’s smart replies requires a subscription to specific Google services. Users with a Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, or Education Premium add-on, or those with a Google One AI Premium subscription, will benefit from this feature. Google has noted that it may take up to 15 days for the feature to become available in users’ apps, and they should ensure that “Smart features and personalization” is enabled in the Gmail app’s settings.
The introduction of contextual smart replies signifies a significant advancement in how AI can facilitate communication in a professional environment. By making responses more nuanced and aligned with the user’s writing style, Google hopes to enhance productivity while maintaining a personal touch. As more users gain access to these features, it will be interesting to see how the landscape of email communication evolves.
