Google TV has cemented its position as a leading platform for free streaming content by increasing its selection of built-in, free-to-watch channels to 150. This significant growth follows Google TV’s launch of ad-supported streaming channels in early 2023, allowing users to enjoy a wide range of content without downloading apps or setting up additional accounts.
When the free TV channels were initially introduced, Google TV supported around 80 channels. The platform has steadily expanded this number throughout the year. As of June 2024, it reached 132 channels, a jump from 117 at the end of 2023. In August, that total increased again to 136 channels. Now, with the addition of 14 new channels, Google TV users in the U.S. can access a total of 150 channels straight from their home screen.
These new additions span a wide range of genres, from classic sitcoms to nature documentaries and even Bollywood films. Some of the latest channels include Billiard TV, Buzzr, Xumo Free Nature & Wildlife TV, The Rifleman, The Conners, Untold Stories of the ER, and Ghost Hunters Channel. These channels join existing free options already integrated into the home screen of devices like Chromecast and TV sets from TCL, Hisense, and others.
While Google TV’s free streaming service remains exclusive to the U.S. for now, the platform has also partnered with major content providers such as Plex, Pluto TV, and Haystack News to further expand its offering. This ensures that users have access to a growing library of free entertainment without leaving the Google TV interface.
Google is also planning to rebrand its free streaming section as “Freeplay,” as previously reported. This rebranding is expected to enhance the user experience and streamline access to free content. Additionally, Google is preparing to launch the Google TV Streamer, a device that will bring this content directly to U.S. users later this month.
