Google Meet is rolling out a notable update aimed at enhancing productivity during meetings with the introduction of an AI-powered note-taking tool. Powered by Google’s Gemini AI platform, the “Take notes for me” feature is designed to automatically capture and organize meeting notes, enabling participants to concentrate more on discussions and collaboration.
First announced in August 2023, the feature is now being made available to Google Workspace users. However, the rollout is initially limited to those with specific Google Workspace plans, including Gemini Enterprise, Gemini Education Premium, or AI Meetings & Messaging add-ons. This limitation means that not all users will have immediate access to this new tool.
The feature will automatically document meeting discussions in a Google Docs file, which will be saved to the Google Drive account of the meeting organizer. The notes are also attached to the corresponding calendar event, making it accessible to colleagues within the organization. This automated process aims to address the challenge of staying engaged in discussions while also keeping an accurate record of the meeting and follow-up tasks.
For those who join a meeting late, the tool offers a “summary so far” feature, which provides a recap of what has already taken place, ensuring that everyone can catch up quickly. Currently, the feature is available only on desktop versions of Google Meet and requires meetings to be conducted in spoken English.
This update is part of Google Meet’s broader strategy to enhance the efficiency and productivity of its users. The company has been integrating AI-driven tools into its Workspace suite, with the AI Meetings and Messaging add-on being one of the key offerings. At $10 per user per month for most Google Workspace plans, this add-on offers features such as the “Translate for me” tool, which automatically detects and translates captions in Google Meet calls. Additionally, Google Chat spaces now have the capacity to accommodate up to 500,000 members, facilitating expansive company-wide communication.
Beyond Google Meet, Gmail is also receiving upgrades as part of this AI push. The updates include improved voice prompts for sending emails on the go and an instant polish tool that can convert rough notes into fully composed emails with just a click. By automating routine tasks like note-taking, Google aims to help users focus more on meaningful interactions and decision-making during meetings.
