Google has quietly made a major change to Gmail accounts. Users can now change their @gmail.com email address without creating a new Google account. This means no loss of emails, files, or access to Google services.
The update follows Google’s announcement made in December. The company has now updated its official support pages with clear steps. The rollout is slow, so the option may not show up for everyone yet.
How changing a Gmail address works
When you switch to a new Gmail username, your old email does not disappear. It turns into an alias. Emails sent to both addresses arrive in the same inbox.
You can log in using either email address. This applies to Gmail, YouTube, Google Drive, Maps, and Google Play.
Your data stays untouched. Emails remain. Photos stay put. Files and messages are not affected. Google has also confirmed that your old Gmail address cannot be taken by anyone else in the future.
Gmail address change limits you should know
There are restrictions. Once you change your Gmail address, you must wait 12 months before making another change.
Each account can change its Gmail address only three times. That means one original address and three changes in total.
Some older services may still show your old email. This mostly applies to calendar events created before the change.
Google has also warned that certain services may be affected. Chromebook users should be careful. People who use Sign in with Google on other websites should double-check. Chrome Remote Desktop users should review support notes before switching.
Steps to change your Gmail Address
- Start by signing in to your Google Account.
- Go to the Personal info section.
- Open the Email settings.
- Look for the option that says Change Google Account email.
- If you do not see it, the feature is not active for your account yet.
- If the option is available, enter the new Gmail username you want. Make sure it is not already taken or previously deleted.
- Confirm the change and follow the instructions on the screen.
Once finished, the new address becomes your main Gmail email. The old one stays linked as an alternate address.
