The newly released police body camera footage from the day Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa were found dead has brought attention to a deeply emotional moment. In the footage, one of the couple’s dogs, Zinnia, a German Shepherd, is seen quietly guarding Betsy’s body in the home. The officers discovered Betsy near a bathroom, and the dog’s protective behavior was noted. Despite the tragedy, the dog appeared calm and friendly, with one officer commenting on how Zinnia seemed to be watching over Betsy.

Gene and Betsy were found dead on February 26 in their Santa Fe home. Betsy tragically passed away from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which she contracted from rodent droppings. Gene, who had been living with advanced Alzheimer’s and severe heart disease, died from related complications. Their dog Zinnia died from dehydration and starvation, while two other dogs, Nikita and Bear, were found alive and later placed in new homes after being cared for by a family friend.

The couple, who had been married since 1991, lived a very private life. A small memorial was held in Santa Fe with close family members attending. Gene Hackman is survived by his three children from his previous marriage, and Betsy’s passing, along with the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding their deaths, has left many in the community mourning the loss. The Hackmans’ dogs are now safe in their new homes, and their wellbeing has been reassured by the family representative.
