Frozen 3: The second movie in Disney’s Frozen series got a mix of reactions. Some people liked it, some didn’t. But even though the reviews were all over the place, the movie made a lot of money in theatres. That was more than enough reason for Disney to say, “Let’s make a Frozen 3!”
In Frozen 2, the same writer from the first movie, Jennifer Lee, worked with director Chris Buck again. This time, they changed the story a bit. Instead of keeping everything focused on the kingdom of Arendelle (like in the first movie), they took the characters to new places far away. This was a bit unexpected because Disney usually plays it safe with sequels. But this move showed that they were willing to try something new and take some chances.
Also, unlike the first movie, which had a clear bad guy (Prince Hans, who was pretending to be nice), Frozen 2 doesn’t really have a “villain.” Instead, it focuses more on emotional and spiritual growth. By the end, both the people of Arendelle and the Northuldra tribe (another group introduced in the movie) find a kind of inner peace and understanding.
The music also changed. In Frozen 1, “Let It Go” was bold and loud and full of big feelings. In Frozen 2, the main song is “Into the Unknown,” which is quieter and more thoughtful. It fits the deeper, more grown-up themes of the second movie.
Lastly, the way Frozen 2 ends leaves the story open, like a door left halfway open, so it’s easy to imagine a third movie. That’s why fans are super curious and excited to see what Frozen 3 will be like, and what new adventures are waiting for Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Sven, and of course, Olaf.
Frozen 3 gets latest update from Jared Bush
Both Frozen 3 and Frozen 4 have officially been confirmed, which means Disney is planning not just one, but two more Frozen movies! Very recently, in an interview with Collider, one of the creators, Jared Bush, talked a little about how things are going with the next movie.
When asked if Frozen 3 and Frozen 4 would be like one big story split into two parts (kind of like a “Part 1” and “Part 2” situation), Jared didn’t give a direct yes or no. Instead, he said:
Some of that is under wraps, but what I’d share with you is that right now, the work being done on Frozen 3, specifically, is phenomenal. When people see it, I think returning to that world with those characters, the entertainment value of watching them go on a new journey, but that feels very organic to the story they’ve already been on, is fantastic.
For me personally, I think that it’s critical to make sure that every movie we do is fantastic. We have the luxury of being able to look at movies many times, so looking at Frozen 3 as, “Can we tell the very best story we can with that and not worry about where we’re going to split into that next story,” is sort of important. One thing at a time is, to me, the best way to approach it.
Jared also said that, for him, it’s super important that each movie is great on its own. They’re not trying to force two stories at once or worry too much about how Frozen 3 will connect to Frozen 4. Instead, they’re putting all their energy into making Frozen 3 the best it can be first, then they’ll figure out the rest later.
He also talked about the music, because let’s be honest, Frozen’s songs are a huge deal! Jared said the songs in Frozen 3 will continue to be a big part of the story and will show what the characters are feeling, just like “Let It Go” and “Into the Unknown” did in the first two movies. He also hinted that some amazing singers from Broadway are involved again, which means the music is going to be powerful and emotional, and probably stuck in our heads again.
The song is always deeply tied to what the character’s story is going to be and what those dynamics are. I’d say I have an idea of what that’s going to be. That’s very exciting. I think we’ll surprise people in the best way. I guess that’s as much as I can say about that.
Frozen 3 release date
Frozen 3 was first supposed to come out in 2026, but now Disney has pushed it back by a whole year. The new release date is November 24, 2027.
Disney made this change on purpose. They know that releasing movies around Thanksgiving is a smart move because lots of families go to the movies during that holiday, which means bigger ticket sales.
This isn’t the first time they’ve done this. Frozen 2 also came out during Thanksgiving week, on November 22, 2019, and it was a huge hit. So now, Frozen 3 will come out exactly eight years later, almost to the day.
Frozen 3 cast: Will Anna and Elsa return?
Since Frozen 3 is still pretty far away, there isn’t much official information about the cast yet. But looking at what happened with Frozen 2, it’s very likely that all the main characters will be voiced by the same actors again.
Idina Menzel, who also played a big role in Wicked, is expected to come back as Elsa. She has already said she’ll be returning, though she mentioned she hasn’t been told anything yet about the new story or what Elsa will be doing.
Kristen Bell, who’s known for her role in The Good Place, is also likely to return as Anna, Elsa’s fun and brave little sister. Just like Menzel, she hasn’t been given any details about the plot either, but fans are expecting her to be part of it.
Jonathan Groff, who starred in Mindhunter, should return as Kristoff, the kind guy who travels with Anna and helps save the day. Alongside him will be his reindeer buddy Sven, who doesn’t talk but makes sweet sounds, which are voiced by Frank Welker. Welker is famous for doing voices like Scooby-Doo.
Josh Gad, who played the funny snowman Olaf in both of the first two movies, will almost definitely be back. He’s become a fan favourite and has often shared his love for the character, so it’s safe to assume he’ll be part of Frozen 3 too.
So even though Disney hasn’t officially confirmed the full cast yet, it looks like the same actors who made the first two movies so special will be coming back for more adventures in Frozen 3.
Frozen 3 plot details
The story of Frozen 3 will probably pick up from where Frozen 2 ended, but since the movie is still in early stages, no one knows for sure. Right now, everything about the plot is mostly just guesses.
In Frozen 2, the story was a bit different from most Disney movies because it didn’t really have a traditional bad guy. Instead of fighting a villain, Elsa went on a deep and personal journey to figure out where her magical powers came from. At the same time, the movie revealed secrets about the past of Arendelle, the kingdom where the sisters grew up. Even though there was no main villain in the second movie, it still reminded people a few times about Prince Hans, the bad guy from the first Frozen, just to keep him in the background of the story.
Now, at the end of Frozen 2, things changed. Anna became the new Queen of Arendelle, and Elsa decided to live in the magical Enchanted Forest to protect it. They both seemed happy and at peace in their new roles. But because this is a Disney movie, there’s a chance that peace won’t last long. A new threat might show up that could mess up the balance between Arendelle and the Enchanted Forest.
At the big Disney fan event called D23 in 2024, some early artwork was shown. One picture showed a tall, mysterious figure sneaking behind Elsa and Anna. This shadowy character looked kind of like a Viking and gave off a creepy, powerful vibe. That could be the next villain the sisters will have to deal with in Frozen 3.
It was also shared at that event that Frozen 3 will connect directly to Frozen 4. So, it seems like Frozen 3 might not be a complete story on its own. Instead, it could act as the beginning of a bigger adventure, with Frozen 4 continuing right where it leaves off.
Why is Frozen 3 being released in 2027 and not 2026?
There’s an update about Frozen 3, and it comes from Josh Gad, the actor who voices Olaf, everyone’s favourite talking snowman. He explained why fans have had to wait so long for the next movie in the series.
The first Frozen movie came out way back in 2013 and was a huge hit all over the world. But even after that big success, people still had to wait six years before Frozen 2 was released in 2019. Now, it’s been about another six years, and Disney has officially said Frozen 3 is happening. But they’ve set the release date for November 24, 2027, which means it’ll be eight years between Frozen 2 and Frozen 3, the longest wait so far.
Josh Gad recently talked about this long delay on a podcast called The Spotlight with Jessica Shaw. He explained that the reason it’s taking so long isn’t because anyone’s being lazy or dragging it out on purpose. It’s because everyone involved in the movie wants to make sure it’s truly great. Here’s what he said:
“Anything that I have seen or know I will have been sworn to secrecy on. Here’s what I can tell you: There’s a reason the movie is coming out in 2027. And that is because no one wants to rush this. Everyone wants this to not just be a sequel or a money grab. They want this to be absolutely worthy of the story we set out to make in 2013 [in the first Frozen movie].
“And we want to give audiences something that is worth the years of waiting and years of anticipation. And I know that they are actively working on that. And I know that they have a story that they are very, very, very excited about. And beyond that, I think I’ll have Disney lawyers knocking down my door. But buckle up because I think they have something incredible in store.”
