Steve Bannon, Donald Trump’s erstwhile chief strategist, and three other men were charged with fraud by federal prosecutors in New York for allegedly defrauding donors in connection with a crowdfunding campaign called “We Build the Wall.”
The online fundraising group raised over $25 million to help fund a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.
In order to hide the illicit flow of money, the four men routed payments from the campaign through non-profit groups as well as shell companies.
Bannon served on Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, and then as the White House chief’s strategist until he was ousted in 2017.
