Roughly nine years since the events of Season Four (around 2012), Happy Valley on Mars, once a barren wasteland, is now a thriving colony populated by many thousands of people. The increase in Earth-Mars tensions, caused by the discovery of a startling event that could disrupt peace, occurs against the backdrop of significant generational change for both Earth and Mars, and the ongoing friction/conflict related to the two planets’ involvement in interplanetary activities. The creators of Happy Valley place importance on organic evolution over time while maintaining the integral bonds of the ensemble cast members.
