Good news for fans of the classic teen rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You—there’s a new trilogy in the works that’s sure to bring back all the nostalgia and warm feelings! Gil Junger, the director of the original film, recently opened up to People magazine about this exciting project. He’s teaming up again with Andrew Lazar, the producer behind the first movie, to bring this fresh trilogy to life.
The trilogy will follow three stages of life with these titles: 10 Things I Hate About Dating, 10 Things I Hate About Marriage, and 10 Things I Hate About Kids. Junger confirmed that the first movie, 10 Things I Hate About Dating, is definitely happening and is currently in development as a feature film.
He also expressed his wish to work again with Julia Stiles, the original film’s breakout star who played Kat Stratford. Junger explained that Kat’s character really resonated with young women in a powerful way and it would be amazing to revisit her story.
There’s also a chance that Larry Miller, who portrayed Kat’s dad in the 1999 movie, might return. Although the director isn’t thinking too much about casting yet, he’s hopeful to include cameos—or even bigger roles—from the original cast if they’re interested.
For those who might need a refresher, the original 10 Things I Hate About You featured Julia Stiles alongside Heath Ledger (who tragically passed away in 2008), Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, and others.
When asked if he plans to use the new trilogy to honor Heath Ledger’s legacy, Junger responded warmly, saying it’s a “beautiful idea” and he’s now fully on board with including a tribute. “He deserves to be loved,” he said.
So, whether you’re a longtime fan or a newcomer, this upcoming trilogy promises to bring a fresh but familiar charm—and maybe a few heartfelt nods to the original cast members we all adore.
