The Fantastic Four: First Steps hasn’t quite turned into the mega-blockbuster fans dreamed of, but it’s still holding strong. With more than $475 million worldwide, it has already outperformed Marvel’s earlier 2025 releases Thunderbolts and Captain America: Brave New World. The film’s budget is reported at $200 million, which means once it crosses $500 million globally, it will finally break even. The question now is how much profit it can make beyond that.

The reboot has already beaten some big names at the box office. It has outgrossed classics and hits like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, It: Chapter Two, Godzilla vs. Kong, The Matrix, Gladiator, and the very first Mission: Impossible. Its latest victory is edging past Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), which starred Johnny Depp and sits at an 83% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Here’s how the numbers stack up:

  • Fantastic Four: First Steps has made $252.9 million in North America and $222.2 million overseas, for a total of $475.1 million.

  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory earned $206.4 million domestically and $268.5 million internationally, finishing with $474.9 million worldwide.

That tiny margin puts First Steps just ahead of Burton’s fantasy film. Next in its sights are Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($476.1 million), Venom: The Last Dance ($479 million), Rise of the Planet of the Apes ($481.8 million), and Saving Private Ryan ($482.4 million). Each milestone is within touching distance, though progress has slowed.

As of now, the film is the ninth highest-grossing movie of 2025. To climb higher, it would need to overtake Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which has already raked in $597.6 million. That’s about $122 million ahead, making it an unlikely target given the current pace.

Directed by Matt Shakman, First Steps leans into a 1960s-inspired retro-futuristic style. The story follows Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they gain powers after a cosmic mishap. When Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his herald Silver Surfer (Julia Garner) arrive to threaten Earth, the newly formed Fantastic Four must step up to save humanity.
