Yorgos Lanthimos has become a household name following the success of his 2023 hit film Poor Things, and now, just a year later, he’s gearing up to release another highly anticipated project featuring some of his favorite collaborators.
The official teaser for Kinds of Kindness has ignited excitement among film enthusiasts. After directing a couple of absurdist period pieces from Tony McNamara scripts, Lanthimos is returning to modern settings and reuniting with his trusted Greek collaborator Efthimis Filippou, with whom he crafted his early successes such as Dogtooth, The Lobster, and Killing of a Sacred Deer.
So, what is Kinds of Kindness all about? Described as a “triptych fable,” the film consists of three interconnected segments. These segments explore the stories of “a man without choice who tries to take control of his life,” “a policeman alarmed by the return of his wife, who seems to be a different person after being missing at sea,” and “a determined woman on a quest to find a specific individual destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.”
The ensemble cast of Kinds of Kindness is nothing short of stellar. Returning from Poor Things are Lanthimos’ Oscar-winning muse Emma Stone, along with Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, and Mamoudou Athie. Joining them are Joe Alwyn, known for his role in The Favourite, Hong Chau from The Whale, Hunter Schafer from Euphoria, and the versatile Jesse Plemons, whose filmography boasts numerous acclaimed titles.
From the available information, it appears that Dafoe, Chau, Qualley, and Plemons will take center stage in the storyline revolving around the spiritual leader, while Stone and Alwyn lead another segment. Athie seems to be portraying the policeman in the third storyline. Additionally, most of the actors will likely have roles in all three sections, adding depth to the narrative.
Fans won’t have to wait long to see Kinds of Kindness, as it is set to debut in competition at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in May, followed by a theatrical release worldwide in June. Searchlight Pictures will distribute the film in the United States, where it will premiere on June 21, 2024, followed by releases in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Greece.
While eagerly awaiting the film’s release, audiences can catch glimpses of the intriguing characters and offbeat tone in the two one-minute trailers, featuring standout music choices that capture the essence of Lanthimos’ distinctive style. With a runtime of 2 hours and 44 minutes, Kinds of Kindness promises to be a captivating addition to Lanthimos’ esteemed filmography.
