Ethan Slater, who plays Boq in the Wicked movies, stirred up fans after posting a photo from the upcoming sequel, Wicked: For Good, on his Instagram. The sequel continues the story of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) and hits theaters this November.
In the post, Slater’s character is shown transforming into the Tin Man, a twist that already appeared briefly in the movie’s trailer. Fans immediately reacted, accusing him and Universal Pictures of spoiling the plot. Some were frustrated, saying they wanted to see it fresh without any hints.
Others argued that it’s not really a spoiler. After all, the story is based on a book from 1995 and the Broadway musical opened in 2003. People pointed out that revealing a character’s transformation is similar to talking about well-known plot points in classics like The Lion King.
In fact, Slater wasn’t the first to reveal the Tin Man twist. The movie’s hair and makeup artist explained back in January how Boq’s transformation would be done with a mix of practical effects and CGI. According to her, Elphaba’s spell goes wrong, causing everything metal in the room to attach to Boq, which is later enhanced with visual effects.
Slater also shared that he enjoyed exploring Boq and Nessarose’s relationship in the new movie and showing how events twist over time. The Tin Man has appeared in many adaptations of Oz over the years, from books to TV shows, so fans familiar with the story may already expect this transformation.
