Ethan Hawke spoke about his split from Uma Thurman, breaking his silence after nearly twenty years. He was married to her for seven years and finalized their divorce in 2004. They share two children together. Hawke told GQ that the media coverage of their split felt humiliating, even when the stories were positive.
He met Thurman on the set of the 1997 film Gattaca and described the experience of falling in love during filming as intense and thrilling. He said there’s a special intimacy that comes from acting together, one that feels exciting but detached from everyday life. Hawke compared it to “falling in love at summer camp” and noted that this kind of connection doesn’t reflect the reality of daily life.
After the divorce, Hawke married Ryan Shawhughes, and they have two daughters together. Thurman, speaking to People Magazine in 2006, said she could not participate in anything negative about her children’s father and wanted to maintain peace, avoiding any public criticism of Hawke.
