Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande made a statement at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Gala on October 19, 2024, with their ensembles that combined a contemporary interpretation of fairytale elegance with a hint to their roles in the impending Wicked movie.
Erivo, 37, made her red carpet debut in a gorgeous green couture Louis Vuitton strapless gown, which represented her role as the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba. The gown’s bold green tones, bubble hem, and elaborate beading perfectly encapsulated her personality. Her accessories, which included glittering green makeup and rings and bracelets made of green stones, finished the striking, enchanted appearance.
With a more modern spin, 31-year-old Ariana Grande embraced her part as Glinda the Good Witch. Grande chose an eye-catching black-and-white polka-dot vintage 1963 Balmain couture gown in place of the character’s customary pink attire. Her style was modern yet reminiscent of a fairytale thanks to the strapless dress’s bow accent over the chest, tight waist, and full skirt. The characters’ characteristics and the creative approach they are bringing to the Wicked movie adaption were both reflected in their attire.
The upcoming autumn film Wicked is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and the Tony Award–winning Broadway musical of the same name. Erivo plays Elphaba in the Jon M. Chu-directed movie, and Grande plays Glinda. The eagerly awaited film delves into the two witches’ pasts prior to Dorothy’s arrival in Oz, providing a more in-depth examination of their camaraderie, competition, and the incidents that mold their futures.
