The beloved Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane, known to millions as “Dr McSteamy,” is facing one of the most difficult battles of his life. The 52-year-old actor was recently seen in a wheelchair, leaving fans deeply saddened as he continues to fight ALS — Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a progressive and currently incurable neurodegenerative disease. Despite the diagnosis, Eric has vowed to keep fighting, expressing his determination to live life fully and courageously.

In a recent interview with People, his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, opened up about the emotional toll the illness has taken on their family — especially their daughters. Eric and Rebecca share two teenage girls, 15-year-old Billie and 13-year-old Georgia, who are struggling to watch their father’s health decline. “I mean, it’s heartbreaking. My girls are really suffering, and we’re just trying to get through it. It’s a tough time,” Rebecca said, her words capturing the raw pain their family is enduring.

ALS, often known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, attacks the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, progressively weakening the body’s muscles and eventually affecting the ability to move, speak, and even breathe. While there is no known cure, treatments can help slow the disease’s progression and improve quality of life.

Rebecca shared that the family is doing their best to stay strong and has been working closely with therapists to support their daughters emotionally. She emphasized that they’re taking each day as it comes — focusing on love, family, and togetherness during this unimaginable time.

The couple’s relationship has also seen its own journey of resilience. Rebecca and Eric married in 2004 and built a life together over more than a decade. In 2018, after 14 years of marriage, Rebecca filed for divorce. But in 2025 — four years later — she quietly dismissed the divorce filing, just one month before Eric publicly announced his ALS diagnosis. The decision reflected a renewed bond and mutual commitment to face life’s toughest chapter together.

Eric revealed his diagnosis in April 2025 with a heartfelt public statement. “I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter. I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time,” he said.

As the actor continues to battle the disease with quiet strength, his fans, colleagues, and loved ones are standing firmly behind him — sending prayers, love, and unwavering support. Eric Dane’s courage, both on and off the screen, continues to inspire many, reminding the world that even in the face of darkness, grace and resilience can still shine through.
