Hours after what the FBI called a second attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, Elon Musk posted — and subsequently deleted — a controversial comment on X (formerly Twitter) suggesting it was strange that no one had attempted to assassinate President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris.
The post came in response to a user’s question about why there was an attempt on Trump’s life. Musk’s reply read, “And no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala,” accompanied by a thinking-face emoji. The remark quickly drew widespread outrage, prompting Musk to delete the post.
Musk acknowledged in a follow-up message that his remark may not have translated well in the setting of a public post and that it was intended as a joke. Musk remarked, “Well, one lesson I’ve learned is that it doesn’t mean it’s going to be all that hilarious as a post on X just because I say something to a group and they laugh.” “Joke delivery in plain text is WAY less funny if people don’t know the context,” he continued.
The attempted assassination of Trump occurred at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, where the Secret Service fired on an armed suspect while Trump was on the course. The suspect was apprehended later. This incident followed a July attack where Trump was shot in the ear during a rally in Pennsylvania by a would-be assassin who was killed by law enforcement.
Musk, known for his unfiltered comments and provocative social media presence, has faced criticism for his posts, including those involving baseless claims and controversial jokes. His remarks on X often spark debate, reflecting his status as a polarizing figure in public discourse.
