Elizabeth Olsen recently opened up about the challenges of acting in front of a green screen, particularly in her role as Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she likened it to “playing make-believe,” highlighting the disconnect actors feel when their performances are heavily reliant on visual effects.
Olsen expressed a desire for audiences to understand the complexities of green screen acting, suggesting that it would be beneficial for Marvel to release unedited versions of their films without special effects. She stated, “You really have to embrace this dumb point of view, where you feel like a 7-year-old playing make-believe. I do believe that at some point they should release a full version of one of the movies, without any of the special effects so people can see how hard it is.”
As the Scarlet Witch, Olsen’s role involves a significant amount of CGI, requiring her to perform exaggerated gestures and movements to convey magical powers. Despite the technical demands, Olsen has recently shared her desire to explore more serious roles beyond the superhero genre. She mentioned feeling uncertain about the direction of her character following the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where Wanda’s storyline reached a tragic conclusion.
After her character’s demise in the film, confirmed in the WandaVision spinoff, Olsen is now focusing on her upcoming project, His Three Daughters. This suspenseful drama features actors Natasha Lyonne and Carrie Coon, marking a shift for Olsen as she looks to broaden her acting horizons.
