Tensions with Iran are high, and experts are warning about possible retaliation on U.S. soil. In moments like this, you’d want someone with serious experience protecting the country. Like a national security expert who’s spent decades studying threats and knows how to stop them?
Well, if you’re Donald Trump, apparently, you want a 22-year-old fresh out of college who used to bag groceries and mow lawns.
Meet Thomas Fugate. He just graduated from college last year. His resume includes landscaping and part-time work at a supermarket. He’s never worked a day in counterterrorism or national security. But Trump still put him in charge of a major job at the Department of Homeland Security, leading the Centre for Prevention Programs and Partnerships (CP3). This team is supposed to help stop terrorism and hate-based violence before it happens.
Why did Donald Trump pick him?
Well, Fugate really likes Trump. He worked as an intern for the conservative Heritage Foundation and helped out during Trump’s 2024 campaign, basically doing behind-the-scenes tasks. That seems to be enough for Trump to trust him with one of the most sensitive national security jobs in the government.
The guy who had this job before, William Braniff, was a trained expert with more than 20 years in national security and military service. He quit because of budget cuts. Now, that serious role has gone to someone with no qualifications, just political loyalty.
This move is raising major concerns, especially because the U.S. just attacked Iranian nuclear sites, and Iran is now threatening to strike back. So, at a time when the country is at higher risk, Trump handed the keys to one of the most important anti-terrorism programs to someone barely out of college.
This isn’t a joke. This is the real person in charge of helping stop terror attacks in America, all because he’s a fan of Donald Trump.
