The failure of Disney’s live-action Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler, has caused a significant ripple effect within the studio, leading to delays and uncertainty around their next big live-action remake: Tangled. The film has been plagued by issues, from criticism over its CGI to rumored tensions between Zegler and co-star Gal Gadot. Upon its release, Snow White bombed at the box office, with a disappointing 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an abysmal IMDb score of 1.6/10.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is now second-guessing its approach to Tangled, which had been in the works with Better Man director Michael Gracey and Do Revenge‘s Jennifer Kaytin Robinson onboard as the director and screenwriter. Insiders revealed that despite Robinson already beginning work on the script, the studio has decided to put the project on hold for the time being, leaving the future of the film uncertain.
Snow White‘s box office performance has been disastrous, with a reported $270 million budget that only garnered $70 million domestically. Though the film made $146 million worldwide, it still underperformed significantly. The poor reception has been attributed to various controversies surrounding the film’s promotional campaign, which Disney scaled back significantly in response to the backlash.
The underperformance of Snow White has put additional pressure on Disney’s live-action adaptations, and Tangled‘s future now hangs in the balance as the studio reassesses its strategy moving forward.
