Deion Sanders quickly turned Colorado’s struggling football program into a team people started to take seriously, going from one of the worst in college football to a potential Big 12 contender in just two years. With the team winning twice as many games and Travis Hunter winning the Heisman Trophy under his coaching, things should have been going great for Deion and the Buffaloes.
But then, problems started again, and this time, it involved his son.
Shedeur Sanders, Deion’s son and Colorado’s star quarterback, saw his NFL draft stock fall unexpectedly. Some fans blamed conspiracy theories, but the real issue seems to be how poorly Shedeur handled the time leading up to the draft. Reports pointed to his limited football knowledge and lack of understanding about where he truly ranked as a draft prospect. Many believe this falls on Deion’s shoulders for not preparing him properly.
Despite this, Deion hasn’t faced much criticism, at least not from national media. One football analyst, Lance Zierlein, recently said on the “Maggie and Perloff” show that many in the media are scared to speak out against Deion. According to Zierlein, TV reporters and national outlets are afraid of the backlash they’ll get online if they say anything negative about him.
This fear of online outrage has helped Deion avoid tough questions about how he’s handled things, especially his role in Shedeur’s struggles with the NFL draft process. Critics argue that reporters who won’t speak the truth are acting more like Deion’s supporters than actual journalists.
Now, with the hype around Deion fading and no clear path to a top coaching job elsewhere, a rough season at Colorado could put him and the program in serious trouble.
