To paraphrase the Fates from Disney’s Hercules, the anticipation for Deadpool & Wolverine is reaching monumental proportions, akin to the advent of indoor plumbing. After an exceptional marketing campaign that has propelled excitement to celestial heights, all indications suggest that this Marvel masterpiece will be a colossal success in the Multiverse Saga era.
But perhaps that’s too modest a prediction. The fervor surrounding Deadpool 3 arguably surpasses even the anticipation for another highly awaited sequel, last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which garnered nearly $850 million in box office revenue. Could Deadpool 3 emerge as the first MCU film since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home to surpass the $1 billion milestone?
While the answer remains to be seen, the odds seem to be in its favor.
Deadpool & Wolverine is poised to shatter box office records that no other film in 2024 has come close to achieving. According to THR, the film’s unprecedented first-day ticket sales have already amassed an impressive $8-9 million, a full two months before its scheduled release in July. This early surge suggests the potential for an opening weekend grossing over $100 million, placing it firmly on track to become the highest-grossing film of 2024.
2024 has presented challenges for theaters, with the absence of major cultural events like last summer’s Barbenheimer and the lingering effects of the 2023 strikes resulting in a thinner-than-usual lineup of releases. As a result, no film this year has managed to achieve a $100 million domestic opening.
While a few major family-oriented films precede Deadpool & Wolverine, such as Pixar’s Inside Out 2 and Illumination’s Despicable Me 4, if they fall short, the responsibility to revive cinema may fall squarely on Deadpool’s shoulders. It’s a scenario few could have predicted when Fox first took a gamble on an R-rated superhero film in 2016.
In Deadpool, we trust to bring distributors the much-needed revenue.
