DC has revealed that Batman and Superman share a contingency plan unlike any other. In the latest issue of Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #47, the two heroes confirm that their infamous fusion form, known as Superbat, is no longer just a one-off anomaly but a weapon they have deliberately chosen to keep in reserve.
Written by Mark Waid and illustrated by Dan Mora, the issue revisits one of the duo’s most talked-about moments from recent DC history. The Superbat fusion first appeared in World’s Finest #4 in 2022, when Green Lantern Hal Jordan’s power ring temporarily merged Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent into a single being. Though the fusion was short-lived, Mora’s striking design made an immediate impact and quickly became a fan favorite.
Nearly 4 years later, World’s Finest #47 brings the concept back under far darker circumstances. Facing a combined threat from Lex Luthor and the Joker, whose own bodies have been merged through Joker’s technology, Batman and Superman ask Hal Jordan to recreate the fusion. Their individual bodies have been rendered incorporeal, leaving Superbat as their only means of fighting back.
The twist comes at the issue’s conclusion. When Joker’s device explodes, Luthor, Joker, Batman, and Superman all return to their original forms. The Superbat body, however, does not disappear. Instead, it remains behind as a hollow, inert shell, raising immediate questions about its purpose.
The final pages confirm the answer. Batman and Superman secretly transport the fusion body to the Fortress of Solitude, deciding to store it as an emergency measure. The implication is clear: Superbat is now an intentional contingency, one they will only activate if circumstances become truly catastrophic.
The move aligns perfectly with Batman’s long-established philosophy of preparation, while also highlighting Superman’s growing acceptance of difficult, morally complex safeguards. It reframes Superbat not as a strange accident, but as a calculated last resort shared by DC’s 2 greatest heroes.
Given the character’s popularity and Mora’s widely praised design, DC appears far from finished with the concept. Superbat has already expanded beyond comics, with the fusion receiving a McFarlane Toys action figure, further cementing its place in modern DC lore.
All signs suggest this is not the last readers will see of Superbat. With the fusion body now preserved and hidden away, it is only a matter of time before Batman and Superman are forced to “break the glass” and unleash their most extreme solution once again.
