David Corenswet impressed audiences with his performance in James Gunn’s Superman. After the movie hit digital platforms, his self-taped audition video went viral online, earning widespread praise from fans.

In the clip circulating on social media, Corenswet reads an early version of a scene where Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane interviews Clark Kent. Viewers were impressed by how seamlessly he shifted between the calm, mild-mannered Clark Kent and the heroic Superman persona.

Fans quickly shared their reactions online. One wrote, “You better be blown away by David Corenswet’s audition. This dude just oozes that Superman vibe.” Another added, “You can always tell who went to Juilliard and who didn’t… Corenswet is such a theatre kid and it’s so great. He is channeling [Christopher] Reeve so much here, it’s wild.” A third fan commented, “Sorry to everyone else who auditioned because it couldn’t have been anyone else.”

Director James Gunn previously revealed that Corenswet was the first choice for Superman. In an interview with GQ, Gunn said, “From the very beginning, he was the guy to beat.” He explained that the casting process considered chemistry as much as talent, saying, “We mixed and matched these different actors and actresses to find out not only who was the best Clark and who was the best Lois, but who was the best ‘Clois,’ who was the best together? I do think that David was the best Clark, and Rachel was the best Lois—but they also had the most chemistry together.”

Superman premiered in theaters on July 11 and became available to stream on digital platforms starting August 15.
