Dave Franco is busy promoting his horror film Together. He stars in it with his wife, Allison Brie. But during his interviews, another topic keeps popping up, the idea of him playing Luigi Mangione in a movie.
Luigi Mangione became infamous after being accused of shooting the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. Since then, many details about his life have surfaced. Childhood friends have spoken about what he was like growing up. New information about the alleged crime has been shared. A leaked manifesto, supposedly from Mangione, revealed his anger at health insurance companies.
Even before his trial began, people were calling for a biopic. Mangione has pleaded not guilty, but fans already had one actor in mind, Dave Franco. Franco has said he’s never had so many friends contact him about one thing in his entire life.
On Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, a caller asked if he would play Mangione. Franco said this was the thing people in his life have messaged him about the most. He added that he is open to the idea if the right people are involved.
Right now, Franco is riding the success of Together, which has a strong Rotten Tomatoes score and an intense trailer that’s gaining attention online. He seems more focused on working with filmmakers he believes in rather than chasing big studio projects.
Some people think Ryan Murphy could adapt the Mangione case for television. Murphy is currently working on a John F. Kennedy Jr. project for his American Crime Story spin-off. He usually covers older crimes, but this case might tempt him.
Saturday Night Live has already joked about Franco looking like Mangione. Many people think he’s the perfect choice for the role. Whether the project will actually happen, and whether it will be a smart, thoughtful script, remains to be seen. For now, Franco is still enjoying the praise for his latest movie, which is in select cinemas.
