Damon Wayans Sr. recently spilled some major family tea — and it’s safe to say he made family gatherings super awkward for a while! During his visit to the Club Shay Shay podcast, the comedian got real about the time he dated one of his nephew’s ex-girlfriends.
Wayans shared that the whole situation unfolded after he split from his ex-wife, Lisa Thorner, ending their 16-year marriage. He said he spent about two years flying solo, just doing his own thing, until he eventually met a woman who totally swept him off his feet. “I was just like, ‘Oh my God. I’m in love,’” he remembered, laughing.
But then, plot twist, he found out that the woman he was falling for had previously dated his nephew. Yikes! Damon didn’t drop any names, but he admitted he was definitely caught off guard when he learned about the connection. When he reached out to his nephew to ask about it, the nephew didn’t seem too bothered and simply said, “That’s you.” Damon’s reaction? He joked, “Pass the Courvoisier, let’s go!” — basically meaning, let’s just move on and have a drink about it.
Host Shannon Sharpe couldn’t help but tease him, joking that he pulled a “Jackson 5” move — a nod to Jermaine Jackson famously marrying his brother Randy Jackson’s ex. Damon laughed it off and said, honestly, he had just fallen for the girl and figured it was all fine.
When Shannon pointed out that, typically, family members’ exes should be totally “off limits,” Damon clapped back with some classic LA humor. He joked about how tiny the dating pool is in California, saying, “You know how small the pool is out here in Cali? The dating pool?”
Of course, Wayans Sr. — who has nine siblings, including fellow comedy star Marlon Wayans — is no stranger to mixing work and family. He’s famous for teaming up with his brothers and sisters on legendary projects like the ‘90s hit sketch show In Living Color and movies like White Chicks.
And if you’re a fan of the Wayans family magic, good news — back in March, Damon told People magazine that he still loves working with his family. He explained that what other actors have to spend years building — chemistry and trust — comes naturally to them. He even teased the possibility of an In Living Color reboot someday. So, awkward love stories aside, the Wayans family is still going strong!
