Dakota Johnson made her Cannes Film Festival red carpet debut recently, attending the screening of Splitsville. Though already a big name thanks to hits like Madame Web and Fifty Shades of Grey, this was her first time at Cannes.
During the premiere, she talked to Deadline about one of her upcoming projects, Materialists, and her experience working with filmmaker Celine Song. Johnson described their collaboration as “really magical,” praising how in sync they were.
She highlighted Song’s background as a playwright, saying it made her exceptional at sharing creative space with the actors. Johnson revealed that Song would sometimes be physically present right next to her during scenes—just out of the camera’s frame—which made the process feel intimate and poetic.
Calling Song’s writing and filmmaking style the “true real deal,” Johnson expressed how lucky she felt to be part of Materialists, especially since they filmed in New York during springtime, which added to the magic of the experience.
She also shared some fun thoughts about her co-stars Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans, calling them “wonderful” and “pretty funny dudes” who kept the mood light with their humor.
Materialists is a romantic comedy about a young, ambitious matchmaker in New York City caught between the man she’s currently trying to match and her imperfect ex—setting up an engaging, heartfelt story.
