Cynthia Erivo vs. SZA: Who will be Marvel’s next Storm?

Cynthia Erivo knows she’s talented, but when it comes to playing one of Marvel’s most iconic superheroes, she’s going to have some competition. The Wicked star has thrown her hat in the ring for the role of Ororo Munroe, aka Storm, but she’s not the only one eyeing the part. Fellow Grammy winner SZA has also voiced her interest in wielding lightning as the powerful mutant.

With the MCU’s X-Men reboot on the horizon, could we be looking at a fierce battle for the role of Storm?

SZA wants to play a “Gnarly” storm

During an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, SZA revealed her deep love for comics, thanks to her father’s collection of first-edition Marvel and DC issues. When discussing her dream superhero role, she first mentioned Silver Surfer but quickly pivoted to Storm, saying:

“I think that would be so gnarly if I could be Storm’s origin story.”

She’s got the passion, but does she have the edge over Erivo?

Cynthia Erivo has the experience to back it up

While SZA’s enthusiasm is undeniable, Erivo has a massive advantage. She’s a two-time Oscar nominee, a Tony Award winner, and a powerhouse performer, currently starring in Wicked, which has only amplified her star power.

Erivo’s acting range, vocal prowess, and commanding presence make her a formidable contender. She’s already proven she can fly (literally) in Wicked, and her fierce energy as Elphaba feels like a natural stepping stone to playing Storm.

Who will ultimately win the role?

On one hand, Marvel Studios might consider SZA’s massive social media following (23.1M Instagram followers vs. Erivo’s 2.5M) as a factor. However, acting experience and proven ability to carry a major film will likely weigh heavier in the decision. If Marvel wants an origin-story Storm, they may go for someone fresh like SZA. But if they’re looking for a seasoned actress who can anchor the X-Men’s arrival in the MCU, Erivo seems like the obvious choice.

That said, with the multiverse in play, who’s to say Marvel won’t throw a curveball and cast both? A world where multiple Storms exist, each bringing a different dimension to the character, isn’t out of the question.

Either way, fans of Storm are in for an electrifying showdown.
