For the first time since Mike McDaniel took over as head coach, the Miami Dolphins are coming off a season where they missed the playoffs. That’s a tough pill to swallow for a team that had Super Bowl aspirations, especially with Tua Tagovailoa locked in as their franchise quarterback on a massive $212 million contract.
Now, the Dolphins have to make some big decisions about their future, and that might include moving on from key players while they still have value. The biggest name on that list? Tyreek Hill.
Could the Chargers make a move for Tyreek Hill?
According to Mason Cameron of Pro Football Focus, one team that could be a serious trade partner is the Los Angeles Chargers.
Even though Hill had a down year in 2024, finishing with a career-low PFF receiving grade of 77.3, he’s still one of the most electrifying playmakers in the league. Over the past three seasons, he’s been elite, ranking in the 92nd percentile in receiving grade and the 99th percentile in yards per route run.
If the Chargers were to land Hill, he’d immediately transform their offense. Justin Herbert has been in desperate need of a true deep threat, and pairing Hill with Ladd McConkey would give the Chargers one of the scariest receiving duos in the league.
Why would Miami consider trading Tyreek Hill?
While it still seems more likely that Hill stays in Miami, there’s a real argument for the Dolphins to explore a trade:

His Contract is Massive – Hill’s deal carries a $51.9 million cap hit in 2026, which could put the Dolphins in a financial bind. Moving him now would give them more flexibility to build around Tua and address other roster needs.

He’s 31 Years Old – While Hill is still elite, wide receivers don’t typically get better with age. If the Dolphins want to maximize their return, trading him sooner rather than later makes sense.

The Team Needs to Think About the Future – Miami has already committed big money to Tua, and they need to make sure they have enough resources to stay competitive for years to come. Trading Hill would free up space to retool the roster.
Would a trade actually happen?
Realistically, Miami isn’t desperate to move Hill, and they’d only do it if the right deal came along. If a team like the Chargers offers a huge package of draft picks and assets, the Dolphins might seriously consider it. Otherwise, Hill will likely remain in Miami as they try to bounce back in 2025.
Either way, this is a situation to keep an eye on—because in the NFL, anything can happen.
