Could the Cowboys draft Shedeur Sanders and eventually hire Deion?

The Dallas Cowboys have been stuck in a frustrating cycle of playoff disappointment, failing to reach an NFC Championship Game since 1995. With Dak Prescott still under contract, the team isn’t expected to target a quarterback in the draft—but what if an elite talent like Shedeur Sanders unexpectedly falls to them?

USA Today’s KD Drummond recently floated an intriguing scenario: the Cowboys selecting Shedeur Sanders in the upcoming draft, setting off a chain reaction that could eventually lead to his father, Deion Sanders, becoming the team’s head coach.

“Let’s get crazy,” Drummond wrote. He speculated that:

  • The Cowboys would keep Prescott for another year or two.
  • Prescott, tired of constant job security discussions, would eventually waive his no-trade clause before his contract expires.
  • If offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer fails to make an impact, the Cowboys could move on from him.
  • Deion Sanders, a Cowboys legend, could be hired as head coach.
  • Dallas could trade Prescott for a haul of draft picks and rebuild around Shedeur.

On the surface, the idea seems far-fetched. The Cowboys signed Prescott to a $240 million extension last offseason, restructuring his deal to create cap space. However, similar moves have happened before—most notably with Aaron Rodgers, whom the Packers extended and then traded a year later.

Will Shedeur be available at no. 12?

Shedeur Sanders is widely projected as a top-five pick, meaning the Cowboys would likely need a major draft-day surprise or a trade-up to land him. However, if he somehow slips past the New York Giants, the possibility of him falling to No. 12 becomes more realistic.

The Deion Sanders factor

Hiring Deion Sanders as head coach would be a massive shake-up, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility. “Coach Prime” has brought national attention to Colorado and has a strong connection to the Cowboys franchise. If Dallas underperforms and Jerry Jones decides to make a splashy coaching move, Deion could be on the radar—especially if his son is the new face of the franchise.

While it’s unlikely that Shedeur Sanders drops to No. 12, and even more unlikely that the Cowboys replace Prescott this quickly, Drummond’s scenario isn’t entirely impossible. If Prescott can’t get over the playoff hump, Dallas may start looking toward the future—and that future could include Shedeur and Deion Sanders.
