The Atlanta Braves weren’t expected to have a bullpen issue this season, but the reality has been quite the opposite. With just 1.1 fWAR from their relievers, the Braves currently rank 22nd in Major League Baseball. Their bullpen has converted only 12 of 24 save opportunities, and closer Raisel Iglesias has struggled with a 5.46 ERA, going 9-for-13 in save chances.
Now, with their bullpen clearly in need of reinforcement, Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller has floated a bold trade idea: acquiring Oakland Athletics’ All-Star closer Mason Miller. The 26-year-old would not only offer immediate relief but also come with 4.5 years of team control, potentially solving Atlanta’s long-term closer situation.
In exchange, Miller proposes that the Braves send a package of right-handed pitching prospects: Drue Hackenberg, Lucas Braun, and Rolddy Muñoz – to the A’s. While these arms may not be household names, they represent valuable future depth for a rebuilding Oakland squad.
Mason Miller himself has endured some turbulence in 2025, with a 4.85 ERA in 29 2/3 innings. However, he’s recorded a stunning 49 strikeouts and holds a 3.16 FIP, suggesting his actual performance may improve. Miller’s electric arm and swing-and-miss stuff make him a tantalising trade target for any contender, especially one desperate for bullpen stability like the Braves.
Still, the Athletics may be reluctant to part with one of their few marketable stars. They resisted offers for Miller throughout the offseason and may do so again at the trade deadline unless overwhelmed by a prospect-laden offer.
For Atlanta, the trade would be an aggressive but perhaps necessary move to stay competitive in a tight National League playoff race. With Iglesias struggling and the team lacking viable alternatives, Mason Miller could represent both a fix and a foundation.
