The San Antonio Spurs are in an interesting spot right now, and it could lead to something huge.
With new head coach Mitch Johnson stepping in, the team has a real chance to build a superteam right from the start, possibly aiming for their sixth NBA championship. And the biggest name being tossed around? Kevin Durant.
Rumours are flying that Durant might be leaving the Phoenix Suns, and no team is being linked to him more than the Spurs. Though Durant hasn’t said anything himself, a lot of people around the league believe that a trade to San Antonio might already be in the works, just not made public yet.
To make the trade happen, the Spurs would likely need to send Devin Vassell to the Suns. Vassell is a talented 24-year-old with tons of potential, and Phoenix would definitely want him as part of the deal. The Spurs might also need to include either Keldon Johnson or Harrison Barnes to match salaries, along with some future draft picks.
Now, why would this matter so much? The Suns were expected to dominate last season, but didn’t even make the playoffs. Their defence was one of the worst in the league. Meanwhile, San Antonio is quietly building something special. They’ve got young stars like Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox, who could seriously benefit from having a veteran like Durant on the team.
If the Spurs go for it and Durant comes aboard, they could instantly become one of the strongest teams in the NBA, no exaggeration. It’s a big gamble, but one that might just change the game for San Antonio.
