Before securing a Golden Globe for Best Actor in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, the acclaimed Irish actor Cillian Murphy gained recognition in the horror genre with his compelling performance in the 2002 post-apocalyptic film, 28 Days Later. As fans eagerly anticipate a sequel, 28 Years Later, speculation abounds regarding Murphy’s potential return to the franchise.
In 28 Days Later, Murphy portrayed Jim, a bicycle courier navigating a world ravaged by a destructive virus. Despite various deleted scenes and alternative endings hinting at Jim’s demise, he survives in the actual conclusion of the original movie.
Cillian Murphy, who has since built an illustrious career spanning various genres, has always maintained his ties to horror. The question on many gorehound minds is whether the 47-year-old actor will make a long-awaited comeback for 28 Years Later.
As of now, no official announcements have been made regarding Murphy’s involvement in the sequel. However, signs are optimistic, considering Murphy’s previous collaborations with director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland on both 28 Days movies. When asked about the prospect of returning, Murphy expressed enthusiasm, stating that he would “be there in a flash” for another film.
Reflecting on his past collaborations, Murphy remarked, “I made two movies with both of those guys, and I would love to work with them again.” While Murphy’s participation in the project has not been confirmed publicly, his willingness to reunite with the creative team suggests that, despite his busy schedule, he could potentially star in another installment of the chilling 28 Days horror franchise.
