Former Love Island USA contestant Cierra Ortega has found herself at the center of controversy after old social media posts resurfaced showing her using a racial slur against Asian people. The reality TV personality, who had gained popularity on the show as one half of a fan-favorite couple, took to TikTok to address the situation with a nearly five-minute video, calling it not an apology, but an “accountability video.” Ortega, visibly emotional, directed her message to the Asian community, saying, “I am deeply, truly, honestly so sorry,” and emphasized that her actions were inexcusable, regardless of her intent.

In her statement, Ortega acknowledged that while she did not understand the weight or historical pain attached to the slur at the time she used it, that ignorance does not absolve her of responsibility. “I had no ill intention when I was using it, but that’s absolutely no excuse because intent doesn’t excuse ignorance,” she said. Her tone throughout the video reflected remorse, as she explained that she has spent the past 48 hours in the U.S. processing the consequences of her words—not just on her own reputation, but on her family’s safety and well-being. According to Ortega, her family has faced severe backlash, including threats and even contact with immigration authorities, which she described as “unjust” and rooted in misdirected anger.

Despite the online outrage, Ortega urged viewers not to respond with more hate. “There’s no need to fight hate with hate,” she said, underlining her belief that justice should not come at the cost of more harm. “If you want to know that you’re heard and that I’m sorry and that I will move differently, I promise you, that’s what will happen,” she added, pledging to educate herself and act more thoughtfully moving forward.

Inside the villa, Ortega’s sudden exit was announced by host Iain Stirling during Sunday’s episode, citing a “personal situation.” Ortega confirmed that she agreed with the network’s decision to remove her from the show, stating, “This is something that deserved punishment, and the punishment has been absolutely received.” Notably, she made no reference to her former partner on the show, Nic Vansteenberghe, who has since coupled up with Orlandria Carthen. The new pair remains in the competition as of Tuesday’s episode, vying for the show’s USD 100,000 grand prize.

While Ortega’s departure and apology have drawn mixed reactions online, many are watching closely to see if her promise to “move differently” will lead to meaningful change beyond the screen.
