China has pushed back against US President Donald Trump’s comments on its wind energy record at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The country reaffirmed its commitment to advancing global low-carbon energy.

Trump criticizes China’s wind energy approach

At Davos, Trump targeted China’s role in the global wind energy sector. He noted that China produces most of the world’s commercial wind turbines but, in his view, has few domestic wind farms. He questioned the logic of nations buying Chinese windmills, calling them “stupid” for relying on a major competitor for their energy infrastructure.

Trump’s remarks reflected his “America First” approach, emphasizing domestic production, energy independence, and skepticism toward the global energy transition strategy.

China highlights its global wind power impact

China’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, responded by emphasizing the country’s leadership in wind energy. China has held the world’s largest installed wind power capacity for 15 consecutive years. The country’s wind and solar exports have helped other nations reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 4.1 billion tons.

Guo stressed that China remains committed to working with the global community to advance green energy and low-carbon solutions.

Trump’s administration has consistently criticized wind energy, calling turbines costly and inefficient. Meanwhile, the European Union is investigating subsidies for Chinese wind turbine suppliers selling to Europe. Beijing has denounced this move as protectionist.

Despite these challenges, the EU achieved a milestone in 2024 when wind and solar generation surpassed fossil fuels for electricity production. This reflects a continued push toward low-carbon energy, even as some governments remain cautious about the transition.

China’s response underscores its growing influence in renewable energy, while Trump’s criticism highlights ongoing tensions between economic strategy, environmental goals, and global energy leadership.
