It’s been seven months since Liam Payne’s sudden and tragic death, and now his ex-partner Cheryl Cole has been officially appointed to manage his $32.2 million estate. Liam and Cheryl were together from 2016 to 2018, and they share an 8-year-old son named Bear.

Liam, who died last October at age 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina, unfortunately never made a will before his passing. Because of that, the handling of his estate follows UK intestacy laws, which means that without a spouse, the estate’s management falls to the next of kin—in this case, Cheryl and a solicitor named Richard Mark Bray, who have been appointed as administrators.

Court documents made public on May 1 confirm that Liam’s UK estate was worth roughly $38 million before taxes and debts, leaving about $32.2 million net.

Even though Cheryl and the solicitor now oversee the estate, their powers are still somewhat limited for the time being. They can manage the money but cannot yet distribute it. Eventually, Liam’s son Bear is expected to inherit everything, since UK law prioritizes children when there’s no spouse or civil partner.

After Liam’s passing, Cheryl called the loss “earth-shattering,” reflecting the deep impact on her and their son. Liam had been in a relationship with influencer Kate Cassidy for two years before his death. The official inquest in the UK confirmed he died from “polytrauma” caused by the fall.
