Charlie Puth is ringing in the holiday season with a new release titled “December 25th.” The melancholic, ’80s-inspired track captures the feeling of longing and loss, as Puth reflects on missing someone special during the festive holiday.
“December 25th is the day I always miss you the most,” Puth sings in the deeply emotional ballad. “‘Cause the music and the lights, it reminds me of a night/ that you told me you had to go/ December 25th is the day that always hits me the most/ still got no goodbye/ so I’d rather stay inside/ spending Christmas here alone.”
In a statement, Puth shared the backstory of the song, explaining how it came together quickly and spontaneously. “I wrote and recorded ‘December 25’ completely on a whim a few weeks ago in my studio while working on my new album,” Puth said. “And though it sounds absolutely nothing like anything on the album, I figured why not share it for the holidays. So here you go.”
Earlier this year, Puth spoke with Rolling Stone about his surprise when Taylor Swift mentioned him on her album Tortured Poets Department, saying, “My first thought was like, ‘Wow. She said my name.’” He added that it was an emotional moment for him, as he’s always reflective of his past, but grateful for the present.
Puth also discussed his creative approach to his upcoming album, revealing that he’s moving away from traditional songwriting. “I’m producing it in a way where I just hit record, do a couple of takes with the band, and then I don’t write any lyrics down,” Puth explained. “It’s just free-flowing, more natural. No Auto-Tune, just raw emotion and truth in every word.”
Fans can now enjoy “December 25th” as a heartfelt holiday offering, showcasing Puth’s ability to blend personal reflection with the spirit of the season.
