Cate Blanchett is reminiscing about the good old days when Hollywood award shows weren’t televised, and celebrities could actually enjoy a moment of privacy.
During an appearance on Las Culturistas With Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang, the Ocean’s 8 actress expressed her desire for the Oscars to return to a time before cameras broadcasted every moment. According to Blanchett, in today’s world, where phones capture everything, true privacy is almost nonexistent.
Reflecting on her favorite era, she shared that the ‘80s—especially the Mardi Gras parties in Sydney—held a special place in her heart. “They were so present, you know, they were just together, collectively, having a great time. It was nonaggressive. No one was being recorded. No one cared what anyone did,” she recalled.
The actress was shocked to learn about a viral TikTok trend where people attempt to decipher celebrity conversations from awards show footage. Hosts Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang explained that some fans have even managed to accurately lip-read private discussions.
Yang described this trend as making Hollywood events feel “treacherous,” a sentiment Blanchett agreed with. She acknowledged that the entertainment industry currently feels both fragmented and overwhelming.
However, despite the challenges, Blanchett believes that now more than ever, industry professionals should focus on celebrating their work and the art they create together.
