Carrie Coon has been making waves with her performance in The White Lotus season 3, but during a recent chat with Variety, she opened up about a surprising decision she made in the past: turning down a role in Avengers: Endgame. Her husband, Tracy Letts, reportedly thought she should have felt more grateful for the opportunity. But for Coon, it wasn’t just about being part of a big franchise that rakes in millions; it was about valuing herself and her time.
The Gone Girl actress explained that, despite her decades of experience in the industry, the pay offered didn’t match what she thought she deserved. “I expect to be paid according to my experience,” she said, but instead, she was offered what she considered an entry-level salary. She stressed that, as a mother, her time has always been more valuable than money. It wasn’t just a matter of finances—it was about making decisions that respected her time and family life.
Coon believes the comment she got at the time wasn’t necessarily sexist but was more reflective of the entertainment industry’s focus on intellectual property (IP) during that period. However, she feels that things might be shifting, and the industry could be heading in a better direction.
As for her standout performance in The White Lotus season 3, Coon’s character, Laurie, delivered a powerful monologue in the final episode that has fans buzzing. She shared that the director, Mike White, had a very specific vision for the scene, but it took several retakes to nail it. The real magic, she says, came from the strong bond she formed with her co-stars Leslie Bibb and Michelle Monaghan during the filming. “The best work happens in between people,” she reflected, giving credit to her fellow actors for helping her stay focused.
The White Lotus season 3 is now available for streaming on Max.
