Canon has introduced the EOS C80, a groundbreaking cinema camera that promises to be the most powerful and versatile option yet for indie filmmakers. This latest model is a significant enhancement over the four-year-old EOS C70, boasting a range of new features that elevate it above its predecessor.
The EOS C80 mirrors the compact size of the EOS C70 but introduces a host of improvements, including the same full-frame backside-illuminated stacked sensor with 6K video capabilities as found in the newly announced EOS C400. This sensor upgrade is complemented by the world’s first triple base ISO, a feature inherited from the EOS C400. Unlike the dual base ISO systems of competitors like the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K and Panasonic Lumix S5 II, the EOS C80’s triple base ISO offers three settings—ISO 800, ISO 3200, and ISO 12,800—providing exceptional versatility and image quality across various lighting conditions.
While the EOS C80 is tailored for video, it shares the RF-mount of Canon’s mirrorless cameras, featuring a built-in grip and a 3.5-inch flip-out touchscreen. This design choice makes it more accessible to users familiar with Canon’s mirrorless lineup, such as the EOS R5 Mark II, compared to Canon’s modular cinema cameras like the EOS C400.
The new camera captures up to 16 stops of dynamic range and supports 12-bit RAW video internally with Canon’s Cinema Raw Light color profile. It offers impressive video resolutions and frame rates: 6K at 30fps, 4K at 120fps, and 2K at 180fps. For focusing, Canon’s dual-pixel CMOS autofocus covers the entire frame, although the 5-axis stabilization is electronic and may require additional stabilization tools for handheld shooting.
The EOS C80 also includes video-specific features not found in hybrid cameras, such as built-in ND filters (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 stops) and robust connectivity options, including 12G SDI and mini-XLR terminals for accessories. It can be adapted to Canon EF and PL-mount lenses, accommodating high-quality cine optics like those from Cooke.
Priced at £5,339 for the body only, the EOS C80 is now available for pre-order. Its combination of high-end features and compact design is expected to make it a top choice for both indie filmmakers and broadcast professionals.
