Kevin Spacey is set to make a notable return to the Cannes Film Festival for the first time since 2016. The two-time Oscar winner will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Better World Fund’s gala on May 20, arriving in Cannes on May 18. According to Variety, he may also appear on the red carpet at the Palais, marking a significant moment for the actor after his career stalled following multiple sexual misconduct allegations.
Spacey’s professional life took a major hit in 2017 when those allegations surfaced. However, he was found not liable in a 2022 civil lawsuit in New York and later acquitted in a 2023 criminal case in London. Since then, he has been gradually reemerging into public life, receiving a similar lifetime achievement honor in Italy last year. The Better World Fund, which is honoring him, has previously recognized stars like Kevin Costner and Sharon Stone.
His return to Cannes is also tied to promoting his new British indie thriller, The Awakening. In this film, Spacey plays the leader of a secret global organization. Producer Matt Hookings of Camelot Films noted, “It’s not House of Cards, but it’s very in line with that kind of character.” The movie is the first Spacey has shot since being cleared of charges in the U.K.
Hookings explained that the lifetime achievement award and Spacey’s Cannes appearance are part of a strategic marketing effort to draw attention to The Awakening. “If anyone speaks to him, he can say he’s in Cannes receiving an award, but also here with the film, so the movie gets plugged,” Hookings said.
He added that securing the Better World Fund award was relatively easy, since the fundraiser’s organizer is a fan of Spacey. Although flying Spacey and his team to Cannes was costly for the small indie company, Hookings believes it’s worthwhile.
Hookings acknowledged that reactions to Spacey’s return will be mixed. While many fans remain supportive and will be excited, some may question his presence. He hopes that understanding the purpose behind the visit will encourage people to consider giving Spacey a second chance.
