Canadian stocks rose on Friday, with the S&P/TSX Composite closing up 0.43% at a new all-time high. Gains in materials, information technology, and energy sectors helped push the market higher.

Top performers included Capstone Mining, which jumped 8.78% to 15.37, hitting a five-year high. Aya Gold & Silver rose 6.42% to 27.03, reaching an all-time high, while Discovery Silver gained 6.40% to 11.64, also a five-year high.

The biggest losers were Bausch Health, down 11.03% to 8.07, NovaGold Resources falling 6.15% to 13.57, and Badger Infrastructure down 3.87% to 78.02. Overall, 566 stocks rose, 386 fell, and 82 remained unchanged.

Market volatility fell, with the S&P/TSX 60 VIX dropping 1.71% to 14.97.

In commodities, gold futures for February delivery rose 1.38% to $4,981.34 per troy ounce. Crude oil for March delivery gained 3.23% to $61.28 a barrel, and Brent crude rose 3.28% to $66.16 a barrel.

Currency markets were mostly steady. CAD/USD held at 0.73, CAD/EUR was at 0.62, and the US Dollar Index fell 0.91% to 97.28.
