Grey’s Anatomy continues to prove why it remains one of television’s most emotionally charged and unpredictable medical dramas. Over two decades after its debut, the series still manages to keep fans on edge — and according to Camilla Luddington, who plays the beloved “Jo Wilson,” the upcoming Season 22 will be one of the most explosive yet.
In a recent conversation with PEOPLE, Luddington teased what lies ahead following the catastrophic hospital explosion that closed out Season 21. Picking up right where the finale left off, the new season will dive straight into the chaos and heartbreak that follows the blast at Grey Sloan Memorial. Luddington promised fans that the upcoming episodes will be intense, emotional, and packed with shocking twists.
“There’s so much story that’s told in that, that I don’t know how we’re not a two-hour premiere, honestly,” she said. “It feels like two hours’ worth of story. It’s intense. ‘Explosive’ will be a great way to describe it. It’s the Grey’s you know and love — but maybe also the Grey’s you love to hate a little bit. I think there’s going to be some throwing things at your TV screen, which is what Grey’s does best, too. Some things will make fans happy, and some will definitely make them cry.”
The actress also revealed that the question on everyone’s mind — who survived the explosion — won’t be answered right away. “You will have to wait until the end… sometimes even a little bit into the next episode,” she teased. “It was not an easy episode to shoot. It was not fun to shoot. It’s a ride.”
The Season 21 finale left fans in total shock. In the climactic episode, Grey’s Anatomy once again leaned into its signature high-stakes storytelling, as a distraught mother, Jenna Gatlin (played by Piper Perabo), stormed into the hospital threatening to blow it up after her daughter Dylan’s brain surgery went wrong. Despite Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) managing to save Dylan, Jenna revealed she had brought a tank of acetylene gas, creating a terrifying hostage situation. While she later claimed the tank was empty, a forgotten valve caused a massive explosion that tore through the surgical floor.
The episode’s final moments mirrored one of the show’s most haunting images — Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) watching the hospital consumed by flames, just as she did years earlier in Season 13.
As Season 22 prepares to premiere on October 9, 2025, at 10:00 p.m. ET on ABC, fans are bracing themselves for heartbreak, loss, and perhaps a few long-awaited moments of hope. From what Camilla Luddington promises, it seems Grey’s Anatomy is about to deliver yet another unforgettable chapter — one that reminds viewers why, after all these years, they still can’t look away.
