Call of Duty Implements Creative Approach to Penalize Cheaters Exploiting the Ray Gun in MW3 Multiplayer

In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3‘s ongoing Season 1, there’s been an intriguing development concerning the appearance of the MWZ Ray Gun wonder weapon, originally from the game’s co-op Zombies mode. This weapon, not yet officially available in the game’s multiplayer mode, has been accessed by cheaters ahead of its intended release in the upcoming Vortex mode.

The Vortex mode planned for Modern Warfare 3’s Season 1 Reloaded introduces a scenario where one player possesses the powerful Ray Gun, and eliminating that player allows the victor to claim and wield the weapon. However, cheaters managed to gain unauthorized access to the Ray Gun and use it in standard multiplayer matches. As a response to this unauthorized usage, reports have surfaced suggesting that these cheaters are now facing a unique form of punishment.

According to Call of Duty Updates on Twitter, the cheaters wielding the Ray Gun in regular multiplayer matches are now experiencing a curious penalty: firing the Ray Gun results in self-inflicted damage. It appears that using the weapon against other players causes these cheaters to damage themselves, effectively rendering the Ray Gun nearly useless in their hands.

It’s uncertain if this self-inflicted damage occurs only upon hitting an opponent or with every shot fired. However, this peculiar penalty might serve as a deterrent for cheaters who aim to gain an unfair advantage. While this measure seems like a temporary solution, players are awaiting a permanent fix from Sledgehammer Games before the Vortex mode launches. Some have expressed their belief that Sledgehammer should outright ban the Ray Gun cheaters from Modern Warfare 3, which could still be a consideration if the self-damage punishment fails to deter them effectively.

The introduction of this self-inflicting damage as a consequence for wrongful use of the Ray Gun in multiplayer is seen as a makeshift solution, and players are hopeful that Sledgehammer Games is actively working on a more permanent resolution before the Vortex mode becomes available later in Season 1.
