With package theft on the rise, one California woman decided to take matters into her own hands—using Apple’s AirTags to track down those responsible. Her innovative approach led to the arrest of two individuals suspected of repeatedly stealing packages from her doorstep.
The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, had grown increasingly frustrated as her packages continued to disappear. Determined to catch the thieves, she strategically placed an AirTag, a small tracking device designed for consumer use, inside a seemingly ordinary package. The AirTag, connected to Apple’s Find My network, allowed her to monitor its location in real time.
It didn’t take long for the bait package to be taken. The woman quickly noticed the AirTag’s movement and contacted local authorities, providing them with the precise location data. Law enforcement officers tracked the signal to a nearby address, where they discovered two individuals with the stolen package in their possession.
Further investigation revealed that these suspects may have been involved in other thefts in the area, as several additional packages were recovered from the scene. The suspects were promptly arrested and now face multiple charges related to theft.
Authorities have commended the woman for her resourcefulness, noting that the use of consumer-grade technology in this manner is a growing trend in crime prevention. “This is a great example of how everyday technology can be leveraged to combat crime,” said a spokesperson for the California Police Department.
