Britney Spears is opening up about one of the most painful chapters of her life, revealing that her short-lived marriage to Sam Asghari was less about love and more about survival during a time she felt completely cut off from her children.
The pop icon, 43, reflected on Instagram about the emotional toll of being estranged from her sons Sean Preston, 19, and Jayden James, 18. Both moved to Hawaii with their father Kevin Federline in 2023, but Spears admitted their relationship had been strained long before then.
“We’re just people so fragile and human,” Britney wrote. “The hardest years of my life were my two sons gone for those 3 years … I was cut off from calling or texting and I remember in shock my secret to survival was denial and a lot of tears. It’s weird, me and Sam were married but it almost felt like a fake distraction to help me deal with it.”
Britney and Sam wed in June 2022, but by July 2023 their marriage had ended. For the singer, that period became more about coping with grief than building a future together.
Now, with signs that her bond with her children is improving, Britney says she finally feels like she’s healing. “Well I know I’m healing bc I’m hungry again like a child or baby… I’m so hungry it hurts and when I eat it’s like it’s my first time ever eating in my life,” she shared. “I believe although I loved my home there is waaay too much abuse and trauma in there…. Today I thank Jesus for food … My soul has never experienced food like this a day in my life … so silly and embarrassing I’m going to eat cookies and cream ice cream now … god bless u all.”
Her comments echo a turning point reported late last year. In November 2024, Jayden was spotted visiting his mother in Los Angeles. By December, both Sean and Jayden celebrated Christmas with her. Britney described that holiday as the “Best Christmas of my life !!!”
