Nicola Coughlan recently shared a fun behind-the-scenes story about her very first scene with Luke Newton for Bridgerton season 3 — and guess what? It was the show-stopping ballroom scene! At that point in the story, Luke’s character Colin is super confused about his feelings for Nicola’s character Penelope. He’s totally fuming because he’s watching her dance with another eligible guy, which makes for some serious drama.
But here’s the twist: Luke was actually sick while they filmed this big moment! Nicola told British Vogue all about it, saying that even though they look totally natural and smooth on screen, it wasn’t an easy day at all. She described it as a bit “scary” for a few reasons. First, their characters’ relationship was very different from how it was in the earlier seasons, so they had to really get into a new vibe. Plus, the ballroom set was massive, which added to the pressure.
Nicola also spilled some details about Penelope’s wedding dress in season 3 — spoiler alert: Penelope and Colin finally tie the knot, wrapping up their sweet friends-to-lovers story. The dress was designed by John Glaser, who let Nicola have a say in what she wanted to wear, which she thought was really cool. They looked at some Vivienne Westwood styles for inspiration before picking the perfect look. Nicola said the dress was not only beautiful and delicate but also really comfy, which was great since they had to wear it for three weeks while filming.
