Apple is set to introduce a revolutionary feature in iOS 18 that will allow users to wirelessly recover a bricked iPhone 16 using another iPhone or iPad, according to a new report. The over-the-air (OTA) recovery capability is designed to address one of the most frustrating experiences for iPhone users: when a device becomes unresponsive or “bricked” after a software malfunction.
Traditionally, restoring a bricked iPhone required physically connecting the device to a computer via a Lightning or USB-C cable and using iTunes or Finder to recover it. This new feature, however, will allow users to perform the recovery entirely wirelessly, provided they have access to another Apple device running iOS 18 or later.
The system works by pairing the bricked iPhone with a functioning iPhone or iPad over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Once the devices are connected, the functional device can push the necessary files to restore the bricked iPhone to working condition, eliminating the need for external hardware or tech support.
This innovation is part of Apple’s ongoing push to make iPhone maintenance and troubleshooting more user-friendly. While bricked devices have traditionally been rare, they can occur after software updates, failed installations, or system crashes. With this new feature, Apple aims to reduce downtime and the need for costly service repairs.
Industry experts are praising the move as a step forward in mobile device management. “It’s a game-changer for iPhone users who want more control over troubleshooting their devices,” said tech analyst Amanda Park.
The OTA recovery feature will roll out with iOS 18, alongside other new functionalities, when the latest operating system debuts next year. It underscores Apple’s commitment to enhancing the user experience by offering more self-sufficient and seamless recovery options.
